Inspired by an 18th-century French block print, Ullington’s stylised floral pattern and trailing leaves are set on a background of small dots, or pointillage. This print technique was developed as a way of introducing a gentle hint of colour to the cloth – though the carved points had the added benefit of stabilising the printing block too.
