Netherton is based on an early 19th-century document, the rambling geometric florals of which would likely have been designed to recall the intricate woven motifs found on Kashmiri shawls. The mimicry even extends to the texture – the stylised flowers and foliage are overprinted with hatching, giving them the appearance of a twill tapestry.
