A beautiful mid-scale floral, Abberley is inspired by an 18th-century French block print. Stylised poppies and chrysanthemums wind through a delicate ribbon trellis, which is set against a dotted background. This subtle shading, or pointillage, would originally have been created by carving a constellation of tiny points directly into the block. When printed, these formed an irregular dot pattern. As a result of being carved by hand, overprints and other happy accidents were common. We’ve translated these quirks into our own design, with just a little tidying.
